MADURAI: The lack of adequate number of classrooms available for Under Graduate courses had forced the authorities of Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU) here to postpone the date of commencement of classes for UG courses to July 17th 2023.
Classes for the first year UG courses are originally scheduled to commence on July 11th, but that date has now been changed to July 17th. According to sources in MKU, the varsity faculty and administrative staff are finding it tough to find classrooms for students who joined undergraduate courses in the university.
“For want of classrooms, our university is forced to change the classes commencement date for UG courses. Already there is a crunch of classrooms for accommodating the UG students from last year itself, and this year it is more worse because the MKU had launched six new UG programs from this academic year 2023-24 despite resistance and alert from varsity staff about the number of classrooms available. In the next few days, we must identify the classrooms where we can take classes for UG students of first year and second year,” a few members of MKU Senate and Academic Council told ‘Lotus Times‘ on July 6th 2023 while speaking about the factual position in university campus.
Already there has been stiff resistance from several members of Academic Council, Senate and Syndicate opposing the MKU’s decision to introduce UG courses from last year.
“As new courses have been started this year, the varsity is facing classrooms shortage. There is problem for hostel accommodation too especially for girls. Totally 13 undergraduate courses are being offered by MKU and we require 18 classrooms immediately if the classes for UG courses were to start on July 17th. Faculty associations like MUFA and MUTA had already given a red alert to university authorities four months back itself in this issue, and it had now come true,” a few faculty members in MKU have expressed concern.
