MADURAI: The Joint Action Council of College Teachers (JAC), Tamil Nadu, had today demanded the State government to drop its idea and concept of having a common syllabus for all universities in Tamil Nadu because each university has its own Academic Council and Board of Studies with senior teaching faculty to frame and finalize syllabus for all courses in their respective subjects and departments.
“We are making an appeal to the Tamil Nadu State Council for Higher Education (TANSCHE) to rethink about its common and uniform syllabus for universities. We are making a request for withdrawing and revoking that common syllabus concept. The TANSCHE did not do any region wise consultation or discussion with academicians or teachers’ associations in Tamil Nadu before deciding on having a uniform common syllabus for all universities for courses offered by them. If our demand is not met by the Higher Education Department of Tamil Nadu government, we will go for a one day hunger strike on July 8th and intensify our agitation further,” Dr.M.Nagarajan, convener of Joint Action Council of College Teachers (JAC), Tamil Nadu, has announced while speaking to reporters at a press meet in MUTA office in Madurai on July 1st 2023.
He said that the JAC is going to oppose the common syllabus for all universities in Tamil Nadu because there was no consultation or discussion held with academic fraternity in the State region wise.
“We feel that our Tamil Nadu State education policy is succumbing to the National Education Policy of our Prime Minister Modi government from the Centre, due to some pressures. TANSCHE had not consulted with college teachers, there are lot of problems in this common syllabus concept since allied subjects were removed and electives came in. We are going for a State-wide agitation from July 8th 2023, our college teachers will conduct protests in Directorate of Collegiate Education offices in Tamil Nadu on July 25th 2023,” Dr.Nagarajan has announced talking to reporters at the Madurai press meet organised on July 1st 2023 and demanded that the syllabus must have a purpose and benefit for students.
J.Gandhiraj, State president of Association of University Teachers (AUT), Dr.M.Krishna Raj, secretary of JAC, Dr. A.T.Senthamaraikannan, MUTA president and Mr.Jayarajasekaran, MUTA treasurer, were among those present at the press meet in Madurai on July 1st 2023.
