MADURAI: The participation of men in family planning is slowly and gradually picking up as awareness is increasing for male vasectomy simple sterilization procedure. Several awareness programs are being conducted by the Tamil Nadu Health Department and voluntary organizations for conducting family planning procedures in India- that is vasectomy for male and tubectomy for female, through Family Planning Association of India (FPAI) branches across India.

“The participation of males (men) to undergo family planning-birth control procedure called vasectomy (male sterilization) for men is slowly increasing. Earlier, it used to be very less because women used to undergo the family planning simple operation tubectomy after delivery. But now the awareness is slowly rising as more men are coming forward to undergo vasectomy sterilization, and that is a good sign. We are seeing that in our Madurai Branch of Family Planning Association of India (FPAI), Dr.S.Prathiban, Branch Manager of FPAI Madurai, told ‘Lotus Times’ media website www.lotustimes.org, on June 8th 2023.

For instance, the vasectomy performance in FPAI Madurai in the year 2022 was totally 75 and that indicates the male participation in family planning operation because that number was only 40 vasectomies in the year 2021, and before that it was in single digits only.

“We follow the guidelines of Tamil Nadu Health Department and all government procedures and norms. FPAI is focusing in vasectomy because the State government, primary health centres etc follow family planning procedures. Earlier, it used be female role in family planning because they will be done tubectomy procedure for family planning. Because the male participation is rising in family planning compared to previous years, now at over 70 tubectomy this year, we can say that it is a very good indication in family planning. From the FPAI in Madurai, we are observing the data and we keep the Tamil Nadu Government’s Health Department updated,” said Dr.Prathiban while speaking to ‘Lotus Times’ media in Madurai on June 8th 2023.
