MADURAI: The World Environment Day (WED) message was sent out in an apt manner by the American College in Madurai on 5th June 2023 as a large number of students, faculty, staff and members from various organizations came together to discourage the use of plastic bags, plastic covers, plastic cups etc since they are found to be harmful to environment.
To commemorate World Environment Day today, an awareness drive was conducted from the college campus here through ‘Meendum Manjappai’ programme by distributing yellow colour cloth bags to general public in Tallakulam and Goripalayam area in the city, in association with Thangamayil Jewellery Limited and Voluntary Association for Peoples Service (VAPS) in Madurai. The environment day event was initiated by the Green Management Programme of American College.
Dr.M.Davamani Christober, Principal and Secretary of American College, has said that lot of public awareness is needed to prevent use of plastic as is being advocated by government to save environment and prevent pollution and other harmful effects due to plastic use.
“We must protect our Earth, and the first step is from our homes by stopping use of plastic bags and plastic covers etc. The American College has been doing several programs to highlight avoiding of plastic use, and our main focus is Green Campus. I thank Thangamayil Jewellery for supporting and joining hands with us to carry out ‘Meendum Manjappai’ programme, and I thank the VAPS team of volunteers for extending their help for today’s programme,” Dr.Davamani Christober has said while speaking at the distribution of yellow cloth bags.
NURTURE THE NATURE FOR FUTURE:
The ‘Meendum Manjappai’ programme was carried out with a message saying ‘let us nurture the nature so that we can have a better future’. To send out the message in a strong manner, students and volunteers had thrown plastic bottles and plastic covers in a dust bin and appealed to the people to say no to plastic in every home.
Mr.S.Ameer Batcha, Marketing Manager, Thangamayil Jewellery, Mr.M.Rajesh, coordinator of Green Management Programme-American College, Mr.S.A.Arul, secretary, VAPS and Mr.T.S.Prasanth from Thangamayil Jewellery media team, were among those present at the World Environment Day event held in American College in Madurai on 5th June 2023. The final point that was sent out from today’s programme was to popularize use of yellow coloured cloth bags (Manjappai) which used to be there earlier because ‘manjappai is auspicious and safe’.
