CHENNAI: Well-known businessman and philanthropist Mr.N.Sugal Chand Jain has thanked Prime Minister Mr.Narendra Modi for following the tradition of keeping the Sengol in temple of democracy that is Parliament.
“It is a matter of pride for the people of Tamil Nadu and jewellers from Tamil Nadu. Our sincere thanks to Mr.Modi for keeping the Sengol in the new Parliament building on May 28th 2023,” Mr.Sugal Chand Jain has said in a statement issued on 26th May 2023.
Vummidi Bangaru Chetty, the famous jeweller had designed and readied the Sengol in the year 1947, it is of about 100 to 110 sovereigns which is 800 to 880 gms of gold. It is a matter of pride that symbol of authority- Sengol- which was the tradition of handing over the power had been designed and manufactured by a jeweller from Tamil Nadu, the then Madras Presidency, when India got its Independence, the press release added.
Pontiffs from mutt in Tamil Nadu and Vummidi Bangaru Chetty family members representing were invited for the inauguration of the new Parliament building on 28th May 2023. In the year 1947, at the suggestion of Sri C.Rajagopalachari, a Sengol (symbol of authority) was manufactured as per Tamil tradition of handing over the power and now that tradition has been resumed to keep it at an appropriate place, said Mr.Sugal Chand Jain in his thanks statement from Chennai.
