MADURAI: The Madurai Kamaraj University Faculty Association (MUFA) has today made an appeal to the varsity administration to look into their 12 demands immediately and find a quick solution in the interest of faculty, staff, students, guests, visitors and parents. The reopening of university canteen immediately was one of the demands made by MUFA today in its memorandum and representation to university administration.

On 26th April 2023, a memorandum with a representation of 12 demands was submitted to MKU Vice-Chancellor Prof.Dr.J.Kumar in the varsity campus on behalf of MUFA by its president Dr.A.Velanganni Joseph and MUFA general secretary Dr.S.Pushparaj.

Senior faculty members told ‘LotusTimes’ media on 26th April 2023 that the university has no proper canteen in the varsity campus and there are only a few tea shops and parlour open at five spots in the huge MKU campus.

“It seems that the MKU canteen contract given to a person was over and because the contract is over, we are not having a canteen in MKU. We do not know why there is a delay in getting a new person to start a canteen. Except some tea shops near DDE building and near MUVA Arangu, there is no proper food and canteen facility in MKU campus for lunch etc. Except tea and ordinary snacks, there is nothing available for us in these small shops. We want the MKU authorities to take steps for starting and reopening a full-fledged canteen which was there earlier. Otherwise. our students, our faculty, our staff and parents will find it very difficult for food when they come here,” a few staff members from teaching and non-teaching staff departments told ‘Lotus Times’ media in Madurai today.

Sources said that the MKU canteen is kept closed because the university is yet to clear its pending dues amount to the canteen person who took the contract on an agreement more than three years ago.
