Chocolates in cigarette shape sold near Madurai schools; Food Safety teams conduct raids at 100 shops, chocolates seized from 22 shops

MADURAI: Intensive raids have been conducted by food safety teams at shops that are in close proximity to schools in Madurai city since there was information that shops are selling chocolates that are in cigarette shape and as syringes, toy shape etc in order to attract children’s attention.

A team of officers from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) in Madurai distirct had carried out inspection at Munichalai and East Veli Street areas in the city two days back and some products were seized from shops.

Sources told ‘Lotus Times‘ media website on April 20th 2023 that the inspection cum raids was led by Food Safety officers’ team headed by Dr.Jayaram Pandian who is the Designated Officer for Food Safety for Madurai district.

“The Food Safety Officers conducted searches in about 100 shops in Munichalai area and East Veli Street here. Chocolates being sold in cigarette shape were seized. The total worth of seized products is about Rs.20,000 and they were destroyed. Chocolates were coloured in cigarette form, synthetics added. The Madurai District Collector Dr.S.Aneesh Sekhar had given clear instruction to Food Safety officers to undertake intensive raids in shops in Madurai because chocolate should not be sold in syringe type, as cigarettes and tablets. We must protect our children from getting attracted to these type of things that are dangerous,” a health official said today- on April 20th 2023.
