MADURAI: The Tamil Nadu Foodgrains Merchants Association has today- on 15th March 2023- had made an important appeal to the State government and Commercial Taxes Minister Mr.P.Moorthy requesting them to issue a circular and clarify that there is no target fixed for tax collections.

“Our association has been receiving information that the Tamil Nadu roving squad authorities are stopping and checking the vehicles in transit and are penalizing heavily for small mistakes. When we enquired about this, we came to know that the authorities were not advised to follow this procedure. Hence we request a clear statement from the Commercial Taxes Minister and remove doubts about incorrect information that is doing rounds saying that GST authorities have fixed a target for tax collections,” the Tamil Nadu Foodgrains Merchants Association president Mr.S.V.S.S.VelShankar and honorary advisor Mr.S.P.Jeyapragasam have urged in a letter written to the Commercial Taxes and Registration Minister Mr.P.Moorthy, Commercial Taxes Secretary Mrs.B.Jothy Nirmalasamy and Commercial Taxes Commissioner Mr.Dheeraj Kumar.

In its letter (a copy of which was sent to the media) , the association also said that the Minister clearly spoke about this matter in the pre-budget meeting saying that there is no target fixed for tax collection.

“This is not enough because there are apprehensions among traders and manufacturers. So, we request the Minister to issue a circular on behalf of the Commercial Taxes Department so that it will reach all the small and medium level manufacturers and traders. Doubts will be cleared if a circular comes from the Minister, because right now traders and manufacturers especially at small and medium level are dissatisfied with the procedure of checking the vehicles in transit and being penalized heavily by roving squad authorities,” the appeal letter of the TN Foodgrains Merchants Association, has said.
