Madurai Corporation disconnects water supply for not paying property tax, Commissioner takes stern action

MADURAI: In an important decision taken on 24th February 2023, the Madurai Corporation has disconnected water supply connection for a resident who has not paid property tax amount that is due to the corporation. This action was taken at the behest of Madurai Corporation Commissioner on a resident who failed to pay property tax in Ward Number 91, Door Number 10 in Karpagam Nagar- Villapuram area- in Corporation Zone number 5 west, according to a press release received from the Madurai Corporation here today- on February 25th 2023.

The property tax that has to be paid by that particular house is Rs.1,457 for six months. It was not paid to the Madurai Corporation from the year 2015-16 and the total amount due till date in year 2023 is Rs.23,280 which was not paid by the resident of that particular house- Door Number 10 in Karpagam Nagar in Villapuram in Madurai city. Already, notice was issued to that house asking them to pay the tax amount that is due to the corporation and the civic body staff went there asking them to pay the pending tax amount.

“Since the tax due was not paid till date, the Madurai Corporation authorities have disconnected water supply drinking water connection to that house on 24th February 2023. Corporation staff and revenue staff were present during this inspection and when the water connection was disconnected,” the Madurai Corporation press release said.

The Corporation is taking steps to collect tax dues from residential areas, houses, commercial and private establishments, schools, government offices, shopping malls, cinema theatres and other places in Madurai city, to remind them about pending tax dues and to take action in cases where property tax, water tax, drainage charges and rent etc are not paid properly in time, according to the press release received from Madurai Corporation here today on February 25th 2023.
