MADURAI: Bird count and bird watching was organized in Yadava College campus in Madurai on January 27th 2023 with the college’s Department of Zoology taking the initiative of taking students and bird lovers on a bird tour in the sprawling college campus. Dr.M.Narayanan, Principal in-charge, Yadava College had flagged off the bird watching event in the presence of Mr.M.Rajesh, assistant professor of zoology, American College, who was the chief guest. Dr.B.Mathialagan, Head of Department of Zoology, Yadava College, offered felicitations.
Mr.Rajesh had informed that 49 species of birds were documented after an extensive bird count in Yadava College campus at Tiruppalai in Madurai, and more than 60 students and faculty participated in the event. The birds species documented include Paradise Flycatcher, Blue Bee Eater, Spotted Owlet, Black Drongo, Rose Ringed Parakeet, Rosy Starling, Indian Silver Bill, King Fisher, Red Vented Bulbul, Little Egret, Pond Heron, Darter, Yellow Billed Babbler, Coucal, Hoopoe and Indian Roller.
“More species of birds were found in Yadava College because of large number of trees in the campus and the agriculture land around the college campus. The importance of birds in seed spread, killing of pests and pollinating flowers was stressed during the bird watching event,” Mr.M.Rajesh said. The bird count program was coordinated by Dr.Rajkumar, assistant professor of zoology.
