MADURAI: The International Year of Millets celebrations was held at Lady Doak College in Madurai on November 15th 2022 through a special event organized by the college’s Department of Chemistry and Department of HIstory.
One of he prime objectives of this millets programme is to create awareness on the the health benefits of millets. Mr.Pamayan, a strong proponent of organic farming practices, was the chief guest and he gave insights on the classification and cultivation of millets, the health benefits of millet-based food especially for the younger generation as a healthy alternative for junk foods. Dr.V.Sridevi, Head of Department of Chemistry, honoured the chief guest, a press release received from the LDC here yesterday has informed.
Dr.Lilly Jayaseeli Balasingh, Head of Department of History, Lady Doak College in Madurai, gave introductory remarks by highlighting the historical background of millets and the great efforts taken in India to revive the forgotten millets. An exhibition cum sale of millet based products was inaugurated by chief guest Mr.Pamayan.
This initiative was taken under the Life Frontier Engagement course by the course teachers – Dr.S.Julie Ranee and Dr.M.Anusha Rani (assistant professors in Department of Chemistry), Dr.T.Durga Devi and Ms.M.Muthulakshmi (assistant professors in Department of History), the press release said.
