MADURAI: The Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU) in Madurai which is in a deep financial crisis right now is waiting to get some relief from the Tamil Nadu government because it had given its 207 acres of land to ELCOT upon pressure from the then State government in the year 2007, sources said today.
Reliable sources told ‘LotusTimes’ ere today on November 1st 2022 that the university is facing lot of hardships to pay salaries and pensions every month because there is no proper revenue source or grant available at the disposal of the varsity.
“Our MKU land was taken back by the government for ELCOT purpose. Totally 207 acres of our university land was given back to the State government. Because this university in financial crisis, we are requesting the Tamil Nadu government or the ELCOT to pay some compensation to MKU because the land was originally given to the university in 1960s,” MKU sources told ‘LotusTimes’ website here on November 1st 2022.
The university administration has been making this plea to the Tamil Nadu government and ELCOT since 2017. Totally 744 acres of land was in university’s possession in the year 2007 before 207 acres was given to ELCOT towards setting up of software companies.
“Since the land patta was in government name, we gave the land to ELCOT. The MKU is yet to receive even token money from the year 2007. Atleast Rs.8 crores should be given to us if we go by simple calculation. Forget the guideline value and market value of the land, we should be compensated with some amount….But nothing is given till now for the land given by university to the government for establishing IT companies. Now, we don’t have funds to pay salaries to our staff,” a senior faculty member and a former Syndicate Member of MKU Syndicate, has lamented today.
