MADURAI: An appeal has been made to the Madras High Court today to take up suo motu the allegations and corruption charges in the appointment of Vice-Chancellors for State-run universities in Tamil Nadu. This plea comes in the wake of some serious comments made by former Tamil Nadu Governor Mr.Banwarilal Purohit that VC posts in Tamil Nadu were sold for Rs.40 crores to Rs.50 crores and that corruption prevailed in Vice-Chancellor appointments. Mr.Purohit, who is Punjab Governor now, had made some observations about VC appointments’ corruption on 21st October 2022.

“The open remarks made by the present Punjab Governor Mr.Banwarilal Purohit is a matter of grave concern for all of us in higher education. High Court is the best hope to bring out the truth and we will be happy if the Madras High Court take sup the issue suo motu. There should be a legally empowered and legally authorized enquiry commission to probe into the allegations of corruption for Vice-Chancellor appointments. What had happened in the last 10 years in our State as far as VC appointments is concerned should come out, and maybe the High Court will be the best way out if the honourable High Court take it up suo motu and direct the State government to order a full enquiry into the allegations,” Prof.Dr.R.Murali, a senior academician and State Coordinator of ‘Save Higher Education Movement-Tamil Nadu’ has said while speaking to the ‘LotusTimes’ in Madurai today- on 23rd October 2022.

WE WANT PUBLIC HEARING:

Prof.R.Murali had stated that there should not be any political angle to this corruption issue- whether it happened during the AIADMK period or who influenced whom and when?

“Our demand to the present DMK government is to hold public hearings across the State on corruption taking place in VC appointments for universities. Various associations will be ready to give information available with them on this matter. We are ready to give information. Let there be a time bound investigations into these allegations or complaints, and of the present Tamil Nadu State government orders for a full length probe, we will welcome it,” he added.

Dr.R.Murali had observed that associations connected to higher education and universities have already given several petitions to the authorities to ensure transparency in VC appointments and prevent corruption. “Atleast now, the government must appoint a one-man commission of Inquiry and take steps for a special investigation to bring out the names. It will be better if steps are taken to get full details from ex-Governor Mr.Banwarilal Purohit himself,” he said.
