MADURAI: “The teachings of Mahatma Gandhi are more relevant now because the monstrous economic model followed now in many countries including India is not the solution for people’s happiness. If the people of a country are to be happy, Gandhiji’s teachings become relevant now because we have become voracious consumers whereas Gandhiji thought of creating a rural economy. Mahatma Gandhi is an inspiration to the entire world,” Mr.Jigmi Thinley, former Prime Minister of Bhutan, has said speaking to reporters after seeing the ‘Ahimsa Santhai’ expo stalls at the Gandhi Memorial Museum in Madurai on September 25th 2022, Sunday.

Well known for his Gross National Happiness advocacy for the people, the former Bhutan PM is recognized as a ‘Priest of Happiness’ because he focused on people’s happiness as an index for country’s progress and development.

“Every country and any country can pursue their development methods, but that development cannot be at the cost of BASIC ECONOMIC NEEDS OF THE PEOPLE. I am happy to visit Madurai today. There is indeed a possibility and prospects for India to lead the entire world for people’s happiness. Gross National Happiness is a development model that is needed for humanbeings. Body and mind happiness are equally important,” the former Bhutan Prime Minister Mr.Jigmi Thinley has said at the press meet held in Madurai today, after he went around the ‘Ahimsa Santhai’ stalls (nature-centric economy focus expo from Sept 22nd to Sept 26th) that focused on ORGANIC FARMING, CRAFTS, non-violent economy, capacity building, climate justice, rural livelihood etc.

Senior leader and former Union Minister Mr.Mani Shanker Aiyar and Gandhi Memorial Museum secretary Mr.K.R.Nanda Rao were among those present at the press meet in Madurai today where the introduction about Bhutan former PM’s visit to Madurai Gandhi Museum was given by Mr.Prasanna and others.
