MADURAI: The Gandhi Memorial Museum in Madurai is all set to celebrate the historic and revolutionary decision of Mr.Gandhi changing his dress code from Madurai on September 22nd 1921 and subsequently leading a national freedom movement that made him MAHATMA GANDHI.
“This year 2022 is a significant year for India because Gandhiji took a revolutionary decision in Madurai to change his attire. It was in Madurai that Gandhiji changed his dress code in September 1921 and we are going to celebrate the culmination of this centenary in Madurai in a big way through various events, workshops and a centenary commemorative walk,” Mr.K.R.Nanda Rao, secretary, Gandhi Memorial Museum-Madurai, has said speaking to reporters at a pressmeet held in the museum premises here today- on September 17th 2022.
He said that Mahatma Gandhi had decided to change his attire/ dress during his second visit to Madurai in the year 1921 after hearing and seeing the plight of people (decision announced by Gandhi at the present Kamarajar Salai-West Masi Street locality).
Various events are going to be held to mark the adoption of simple dhoti and shawl by Gandhiji during his Madurai visit in the year 1921. Mr.Nanda Rao informed mediapersons today that the events from September 18th to 22nd 2022 will focus on ‘NON-VIOLENT ECONOMY, FAIR TRADE AND CLIMATE JUSTICE’ and Madurai will celebrate the REVOLUTIONARY DRESS of Gandhiji who changed from his coat to loin cloth in Madurai 100 years ago.
There will be a march to create public awareness for non-violent economy, fair trade and climate justice. The importance of organic methods of cultivation, organic food and environment will be highlighted for the benefit of younger generation through workshops and lectures at Gandhi Museum in Madurai. The walk will begin from T.Kallupatti in Madurai district and will reach Madurai Gandhi Museum on 22nd September 2022.
Mr.Nanda Rao told reporters at today’s pressmeet that there will be 140 stalls at the special expo being put up for celebrating the 100 years completion of Gandhi’s revolutionary dress code switching/ alteration / change that began from Madurai 100 years back on September 22nd 1921. The significance of September 2022 was also explained by Mr.Pushpanath Krishnamurthy (global walker activist) who spoke on climate justice and Mr.Panju who stressed on fair trade.
