Climate change alert message from Madurai stresses on collective endeavour; Lady Doak College holds special lecture

MADURAI: The Department of Zoology & Research Centre of Lady Doak College in Madurai along with Department of Biotechnology had organized Prof.N.Whitin Endowment Lecture Series here on September 13th 2022 on an important topic ‘Biodiversity and Climate Change- A Collective Endeavour for Change’.

Dr.Balachandran Sethurathinam, Scientist F and Head of Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai, spoke about climate change evidence shreds that were documented by the meteorological centres in India and he called for more developing more advanced technologies in the future for accurate prediction of climate change through his topic ‘climate monitoring service at IMD-An overview’, according to a press release received from the college here today evening.

Dr.S.R.Ganesh, Scientist cum Deputy Director of Chennai Snake Park, spoke on how climate change and environmental toxins are causing physical deformities in the endemic amphibians of Western Ghats. Dr.Paulraj Rajamani, Dean, School of Environmental Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University-Delhi, gave clarity on effects of 3G and 4G radiation on plant and animal life, and how these radiations cause damage reproductive and neurological damage to humans.

UNDERSTAND CLIMATE CHANGE:

The lecture series organized by the Lady Doak College in Madurai on 13th September 2022 had provided an understanding of climate change from various facets and the measures needed for anthropologic interventions to stop those that are destroying the environment, the press release said today. Ms.Ridhima Pandey, a 14-year-old climate activist from Dehradun and TEDx speaker, who was included in BBC’s 2020 list of TOP 100 inspiring and influential women around the world, was among the special guests invited as a speaker for this lecture series here today and she highlighted a message on ‘Climate transition- Results of our actions.’ Dr.Christianna Singh, Principal and Secretary of Lady Doak College, delivered the inaugural address.

The year 2023 is celebrated to commemorate the centenary of Prof.N.Whitin who was instrumental in establishing the Department of Zoology at Lady Doak College in Madurai. Dr.Priyatharsini Rajendran, Head and Associate Professor of Department of Zoology, had welcomed the gathering while Mrs.Dorothy Isaac, niece of Prof.Whitin and an alumna of LDC Department of Zoology had reminisced on Prof.N.Whitin.

This lecture series today was organized by Dr.A.P.A.Rani, associate professor and Dr.Marie Serena McConnell, assistant professor, in the college’s zoology department.
