MADURAI: Fourteen railway stations in the Madurai Division of Southern Railway will permanent kiosks to promote local products and to make each of these 14 railway stations a promotional hub under the ‘One Station One Product’ concept announced in the Union Budget 2022-23, said Mr.Padmanabhan Ananth, Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of Southern Railway’s Madurai Division, here on August 15th 2022.
Speaking at the 76th Independence Day celebrations here after hoisting the national flag in Madurai today morning, he said that each railway station is being made as a promotional hub for a local product and hence permanent kiosks designed by National Institute of Design are proposed to be installed. In the first phase, 14 railway stations will be provided with these stalls in Madurai Division- at Madurai, Tirunelveli, Dindigul, Rameswaram, Ramanathapuram, Manaparai, Palani, Virudhunagar, Kovilpatti, Tuticorin, Srivilliputhur, Tiruchendur, Tenkasi and Kottarakara.
PASSENGER AMENITIES:
Mr.Padmanabhan Ananth has informed the gathering that the Madurai Railway Division is constantly reviewing the passenger amenities in railway stations because of growing passenger traffic. “For the rail users, more amenities and infrastructure are being created such as passenger shelters, increasing the height of low level platforms, extension of platforms, remodelling of railway station buildings, foot overbridges, lifts for passengers etc. Many of them are under execution. Computer based announcement system is being provided at 14 stations,” the DRM said.

The Madurai Division of Southern Railway has generated a revenue of Rs.219.65 crores from passenger traffic till July 2022 with 154 per cent increase when compared to last year. The division has done well in goods traffic also and earned Rs.113.45 crores till July 2022 which is 41 per cent more than last year. Overall earnings stands at Rs.359.05 crores upto July 2022 as against Rs.179.44 crores during this period last year. Freight traffic too is on the rise as the Madurai Division has transported 1.05 million tonnes of freight till July 2022 which is 44.52 per cent more than the last year’s actual for the same period.
The 76th Independence Day was celebrated in a grand manner by the Madurai Division of Southern Railway at railway colony ground in Madurai on 15th August 2022. Divisional Railway Manager Mr.Padmanabhan Ananth hoisted in the national tri-colour in Army dress, he being a Colonel in Territorial Army and Commanding Officer of Railway Engineers Regiment-Moulali, Secunderabad. He took the salute in march past by RPF personnel. There was RPF dog show and also cultural program by students.
Railway officers including Mr.T.Rameshbabu ADRM, Mr.T.Sankaran, Senior Divisonal Personnel Officer and Mr.V.J.P.Anbarasu, Divisional Security Commissioner and railway staff took part in the I-Day celebrations in Madurai today morning.
