Tamil Nadu’s Thiruvasagam takes over as 100th president of AIU in New Delhi

MADURAI: Prof.Dr.G.Thiruvasagam, a distinguished academician hailing from Madurai in Tamil Nadu who is well-known for his innovative administration in higher education, has become the 100th president of Association of Indian Universities (AIU). He assumed office at New Delhi and was elected as new AIU president for a period of one year with effect from July 1st 2021. Col.Prof.Thiruvasagam is presently Vice-Chancellor of AMET University in Chennai, he had earlier served as Vice-Chancellor of two prominent universities in Tamil Nadu, namely Bharathiar University at Coimbatore and the prestigious University of Madras.

AIU is one of the premier institutions of India working for the cause of higher education. Since its inception in 1925, AIU has been playing a vital role in decision making committees. In the past, stalwarts like Dr.Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, Dr.Zakir Hussain, Dr.Syama Prasad Mukherjee, A.L.Mudaliar, Dr.Akbar Hydary, Prof.M.S.Gore, Prof.M.S.Adiseshiah and Prof.Shiv Mangal Singh ‘Suman’ served the AIU as its presidents.

A press statement was issued by Dr.Mrs.Pankaj Mittal, Secretary General, AIU-New Delhi, on 30th June 2021 listing out a few accomplishments of Col.Prof.G.Thiruvasagam who was elected as 100th president succeeding Prof.Tej Partap, Vice-Chancellor, GBPAUT, Pantnagar.

“Prof.Thiruvasagam, vice-chancellor of AMET University in Chennai, has combined innovation and academic progress…..he has a career spanning 34 years as professor of commerce and management, and 10 years as Principal of Yadava College in Madurai, a stint as Syndicate Member of Madurai Kamaraj University in Madurai and later as Vice-Chancellor of Bharathiar University and University of Madras. The Association of Indian Universities welcomes Prof.G.Thiruvasagam as its new president and is looking forward to gain from his academic acumen, scholarship and vast experience,” Dr.Mrs.Pankaj Mittal, AIU Secretary General, has said.
