Railway parcel rates slashed by 33 per cent in select trains

MADURAI: Railway parcel rates have been slashed in the Madurai Division of Southern Railway. A railway press release issued in Madurai on 3rd May 2021 has stated that railway parcel rates are fixed based on the type of trains in which parcels are carried or on the basis of the percentage of utilization.

There are four types of parcel rates that exist in the Indian Railway. They are Rajdhani, Premier, Standard and Luggage. The first three are parcel rates and the last one is levied when parcel is carried under the personal in-charge of the passenger or despatching the parcel by the train in which passenger is travelling. Some of the trains in Madurai Division have been categorized as “Premier” from “Rajdhani” with regard to parcel rates by which the parcel rates are slashed by 33%. Train No. 02632 Tirunelveli – Chennai Egmore Nellai special train, Train No. 06106 Tiruchendur – Chennai Egmore Chendur Special train, Train No. 02662 Sengottai – Chennai Egmore Podhigai Special train, Train No. 06852 Rameswaram – Chennai Egmore special train running via Thanjavur, Kumbakonam main line, Train No. 02206 Rameswaram – Chennai Egmore special train running via Vridhdhachalam chord line and Train No. 02652 Palakkadu – Dr.MGR Chennai Central special train running via Palani, Oddanchatram and Dindigul are downgraded as “Premier” by slashing 33% parcel rates. The reduced parcel rates are operational with immediate effect. Now the parcel of one quintal is charged by Nellai special train from Tirunelveli to Chennai as Rs.191 in lieu of the old rate of Rs.290, the press release from the Madurai Division of Southern Railway here informed today.
