MADURAI: During the Corona lockdown, the Amma Canteens turned out to be of great help for the affected and needy poor people. There are 12 Amma Canteens in Madurai city and right from the first day till now they are the answer for people’s hunger.
Tamil Nadu Cooperation Minister Mr.Sellur K.Raju who had inspected the Amma Canteen at Palanganatham here today – 6th May 2020- had given some figures to explain how these canteens played an important role during the current lockdown period. Free food was given to the needy people.
For instance, in all the 12 Amma Canteens put together, from 23rd March to 5th May, the number of Idlis provided were 9,33,526. Similarly, Variety Rice -1,71,980 plates, Curd Rice 88,732 plates and 82,160 eggs. The total number of beneficiaries were 5,05,284, the Minister had informed.
Sambar rice, coconut rice, vegetable biriyani, upma, curd rice, tomato rice, pudhina rice, lemon rice, Idli, pongal etc were available in Amma Canteens during the lockdown period.
Mr.Sellur Raju had stressed that the Tamil Nadu government and Madurai Corporation have taken several effective steps to contain the spread of Coronavirus. Free provisions in ration shops for three months, helping the peple in containment zones through door delivery of groceries etc were some of the steps taken.
Corporation City Engineer Mr.S.Arasu and other officials were present during the Minister’s inspection at Palanganatham Amma Canteen today.
