MKU outreach to manage Corona-lockdown stress

MADURAI: A group of trained young volunteers are going to reach out to people in a prescribed professional way on how to manage the stress caused by Coronavirus COVID-19 and total lockdown.

Thanks to the initiative of Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU) in Madurai, an online training programme for student volunteers took place in the varsity campus here on 15th April 2020, in association with National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) in Bangalore and M.S.Chellamuthu Trust and Research Foundation, Madurai.

Volunteers who are undergoing this three-day Corona stress tackling orientation training are students from the National Service Scheme (NSS). The training is being given to NSS volunteers and NSS training officers via online-videoconferencing by experts from Bangalore and the M.S.Chellamuthu Trust in Madurai will provide focus on how to help the community overcome ‘lockdown stress’.

Mr.C.Kamaraj IAS, Special Zonal Officer for Corona control and relief monitoring here, addressed the volunteers in the presence of Madurai Corporation Commissioner Mr.S.Visakan, Government Rajaji Hospital Dean Dr.Sangumani, well-known psychiatrist Dr.C.Ramasubramanian and others.


MKU Vice-Chancellor Dr.M.Krishnan, university Registrar in-charge Prof.Sankar Natesan and NSS Coordinator Dr.Rajkumar were among those who encouraged the NSS  volunteers to be a part of this important mission of creating public awareness about Corona prevention after their training session.   

On 9th April 2020, the MKU Registrar in-charge Prof.Sankar Natesan wrote a letter to NIMHANS Registar Dr.K.Sekar extending support for virtual training of community to fight against COVID-19, community outreach programmes and involving neighbourhood community in their local areas to prevent the spread of virus infection.
