MADURAI: A large number of residents at Corporation-sealed Yagappa Nagar in Madurai came on to the streets today-12th April 2020- protesting the severe restrictions imposed on their movement by police and civic authorities.
Since a Corona positive case confirmed in this area, the entire locality was cordoned off for more than two kilometers for past several days and people were instructed to confine to their homes only. Angry residents suddenly gathered in a large number demanding the police to allow them to go out.

Many streets in Yagappa Nagar here were made as restricted areas and entry-exit of people is being not allowed for last one week. The entire locality is being monitored by police in streets including MGR Street, Pasumpon Street and Vivekananda Street where barricading was done.
Essential commodities for the residents in this area are being supplied by the Corporation teams. The residents there said that the supplies made by Corporation are costly and they are unable to bear. “We do not have enough money to purchase at high cost….Either we have to borrow or we have to go for work for our daily earnings. Allow us to go out of our homes,” the residents said while staging a protest.
The sudden protest gave some anxious moments since the crowd had gathered in one place and social distancing was not there. Police and Corporation personnel reached the spot and tried to pacify them after which the residents went back to their houses urging the the Government to ensure the livelihood of people living in the ‘Corona red zone restricted areas’.
