MADURAI: Ever since the trains have been cancelled due to 21-day national lockdown battle against Coronavirus, the life of porters in railway stations- railway platforms is full of hardships since there are no trains, no passengers and no luggage.

To help those porters who are clueless due to cancellation of trains, the staff working in the Commercial Department of Southern Railway Madurai Division came forward and contributed money to distribute food essentials to them.

On 10th April 2020, grocery kits were distributed to 50 such hapless railway porters at Madurai Railway Junction here. These grocery items will help the porters’ families come out of hunger in this present Corona crisis curfew time, thanks to the gesture of Railway commercial department employees here.

Mr.Joseph Sebastin, Chief Office Superintendent in Commercial Department of Madurai Railway Division, distributed the grocery kits to licensed porters in Madurai railway station today.

“We thank the support and encouragement of railway senior officials Mr.Prasanna and Mr.Bharatkumar…..Since the porters do not have daily earnings now, we wanted to help them….Money was collected from Commercial Department staff and grocery kits were arranged,” Mr.Joseph Sebastin has said.

Similar grocery kits will also be provided to porters in other railway stations in Madurai Division including Dindigul, Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, Kovilpatti, Karaikudi and Manamadurai, he added.
