MADURAI: The spread of Coronavirus and 21-day nationwide lockdown to prevent its spread has rocked the livelihood of many people. One such affected lot are the small flower shops- flower sellers near the famous Thiruparankundram Murugan Subramanya Swamy Temple in Madurai.

On 10th April 2020, the flower sellers had brought to light their plight ever since the Section 144 restrictions- lockdown came into effect in the last week of March.

“For many generations, we are depending on flower business for livelihood. It is our daily income source……Since the temples are closed. there are no buyers and we lost our income…..We appeal to the Tamil Nadu State government to provide us some relief cash assistance to protect our families. There is no earning at all for us……,” a shopkeeper selling flowers before Thiruparankundram Temple said today.

On behalf of small sellers who depend on daily flower sales for their living, Thirupathi also sought permission from the government to allow them to sell flowers.   There are several shops in front of this temple and its surroundings/ which now remain closed due to Corona lockdown orders.
