101 vehicles in Madurai for fruits and vegetables

MADURAI: Through a strategic logistics approach and planning to control crowds in public places during this Coronavirus crisis time, the Madurai Corporation has roped in totally 101 vehicles to sell vegetables and fruits to residents of various wards in Madurai city daily.

On 8th April 2020, Corporation Commissioner Mr.S.Visakan had reviewed and inspected several places where vegetables and fruits are being sold in packets through mobile vegetable vans and also the temporary shops at grounds in colleges and schools here.

With the support and participation of various voluntary organisations such as ‘Vaa Nanbaa’, the Madurai Corporation is selling vegetable packets with each packet containing 14 varieties of vegetables and priced Rs.100. The fruit packet contains six varieties of fruits and each packet costs Rs.100.

VEGETABLE VEHICLES:

To supply vegetables and fruits through vans, a fleet of vehicles is operating across the city – ‘Vaa Nanbaa’ 20 vehicles, HiTech Arai 15 vehicles, PetCraft 3 vehicles, Lawyers 6 vehicles, Horticulture Department 17 vans, Equitas Bank 5 vehicles, social workers 8 vehicles, Corporation IT dept 25 vehicles and Rotary Clubs 2 vehicles.

The Corporation Commissioner had instructed that social distancing physical distance must be strictly maintained in all shops and markets etc to prevent the spread of virus infection and to follow the rules/ restrictions announced for total lockdown- Section 144. 
 
Mr.S.Visakan also inspected Wakf Board College, St.Joseph’s Girls Higher Secondary School and Teppakulam area from where vegetables are being sold through temporary shops.

Corporation Assistant Commissioner (Revenue) Mr.Jayaram Raja, PRO Mr.Chithravel and others were present during the inspection today in Madurai city.
