MADURAI: The Tamil Nadu Foodgrains Merchants Association has sought the immediate help of Madurai District Collector Dr.T.G.Vinay and senior officials of the district for opening the 100-odd retail small grocery shops on East Masi Street in Madurai.
Mr.S.P.Jeyapragasam, association president, has sent a representation to the Collector stating that there are stocks of foodgrains in retail grocery shops on East Masi Street for which the shop owners have invested money. The shops have been sealed by authorities now and not allowed to open.
“The stocks will get deteriorated if shops continue to remain closed in this lock down curfew period. Our request to the Madurai District Collector is to evolve a plan whichever is suitable for the current regulations and restrictions because of Corona. Grocery shops can be opened on alternate days and strict measures can be implemented to prevent crowd in shops. We will cooperate and support. At least till the stocks in shops are cleared, please permit us to open the grocery shops. Otherwise, the shopkeepers grocery shop owners will suffer huge losses,” Mr.Jeyapragasam had observed in his letter.
A copy of his representation was also sent to Madurai Corporation Commissioner Mr.S.Visakan, City Police Commissioner Mr.S.Davidson Devasirvatham and Dr.M.Somasundaram, Designated Officer for Food Safety, Madurai district.
