MADURAI: The Corona has been taking a heavy toll physically and mentally everywhere.  With curfew, closure, restrictions and lockdown implemented allover, food has come into focus. What about animals? What about monkeys? What about monkeys on Tiruparankundram Hill which are mostly dependent on devotees coming to the temple?

Visibly moved by the monkeys’ struggle for food, a retired Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Malathi has jumped in to feed the monkeys with bananas – plantains, biscuits, groundnuts, water etc- by spending her own money for deserted monkeys of Tiruparankundram in Madurai, and with the support of social workers and general public in that area.

Her intervention to provide food to monkeys at this juncture is very important because temples and tourist places have been closed following Corona scare. And, monkeys took the beating.

In the last few days and on 3rd April 2020, retired DSP Malathi has been spending time in Tiruprankundram in Madurai not only to show her care towards monkeys but also other animals that are looking out for food sources. Malathi’s gesture was appreciated by the people and animal lovers.
