MADURAI: The initiative taken by Madurai Corporation to make vegetables available in packets is evoking good response in Madurai city. Mobile vegetable vans are carrying the packs containing 16 varieties of veggies with each bag (Cover) priced at only Rs.200 to various places in 10 wards here, as per the idea give n shape by Corporation Commissioner Mr.S.Visakan in consultation with several people.
On 2nd April 2020 morning(Thursday), residents of Kamarajar Salai- Keelavasal area had thronged the Corporation mobile van to buy the vegetable packets. This initiative is being implemented to avoid crowd in vegetable markets/ shops and to ensure social distancing as a precautionary step to prevent spread of Corona virus and for the convenience of people since Section 144 / total lock own are being enforced now.
‘Vaa Nanbaa’, a voluntary group of social workers involved in various social causes, along with some lawyers and Vilangudi Wholesale Vegetable Sellers Association have joined hands with the civic body. Mr.C.Saravanan of ‘Vaa Nanbaa’ has said that public response is good ever since it was launched on 1st April here.
The vegetable packet (given at affordable subsidized rate) contains potatoes, tomatoes, onions, beetroot, carrot, brinjal, cabbage, banana, ladies finger, green chilli, ginger, chow chow, coconut, pudhina, malli karuvepilla .
