A tribal village in TN gets piped drinking water, thanks to BARC

NILGIRIS: Banagudi, a tribal village in Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu, has become a coveted tribal village in the State to get empowered with safe protected piped drinking water supply for its households, thanks to the initiative of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Government of India.

It is now an all ST model tribal village in Kotagiri in Nilgiris district and the ‘Nanneer Gramam’ project was inaugurated by Mr.Ranjeet Singh IAS in Banagudi village in the present of several officials and Mr.J.Daniel Chellappa, Senior Scientist (TCW), BARC, Chennai, on 9th March 2020.

In a press release, Mr.Daniel Chellappa has said that Banagudi village becomes the first model tribal village in the State to get piped supply of safe, hygienic, healthy and clean protected drinking water to all its households using the innovative UF membrane technology developed by premier research organization of global excellence- BARC.     

“UF membrane purification systems are robust alternative for RO purifiers for municipal-treated water as well as potable water………BARC’s UF (Ultra Filtration) membrane based online drinking water purifiers do not deplete the essential minerals in the treated water supplied to people conforming to BIS 10500….They do not need electricity for their operation…UF candles are reusable and no AMC is required for maintenance,” Mr.Daniel Chellappa has said.

Nilgiris District Collector Mrs.J.Innocent Divya has extended drinking water pipeline connections to all individual households of Banagudi tribal village comprising ST population. The important role played by JCI Kotagiri NAWA (Nilgiris Adiwasi Welfare Association), DRDA, Jackanarai panchayat and all-women NGO for this adopted village were lauded by the BARC since unique Ultra Filtration technology was installed for Banagudi habitation.

“The major highlight of these online purifiers is that they do not waste life-saving treated drinking water and hence Banagudi is a model tribal village now with a landmark achievement,” Mr.Daniel Chellappa had emphasized in the press release.
