
MADURAI: The Madurai Corporation is taking strict action against those who are using banned plastic covers in the city.
On 12th March 2020, a sudden inspection was carried out at various places and during this raid a penalty fine of Rs.18,900 was imposed on shops that are still using the banned plastic covers. The tough action is being taken on the instructions of Madurai Corporation Commissioner Mr.S.Visakan.
A special team of health inspectors and others from the Corporation had inspected 355 shops at Mattuthavani Flower Market today and vegetable market, fruits market, Meenakshi Temple surrounding areas, Munichalai and Kaalavasal localities in Madurai city.
According to a press release here today, Rs.18,900 fine was imposed on 29 shops that were still using banned plastic covers. And, also 65 kilos of plastic covers were seized during this inspection in shops.
The Corporation is also serious on those who are dumping waste into the River Vaigai. In today’s raid, Rs.29,500 penalty amount was collected from hospitals and shops for dumping waste in to Vaigai river.
Among those who were part of the inspection team in Madurai city today include Health officer Mr.Vijayakumar, Mr.Rajakannan, Mr.Veeran, Mr.Omsakthi, Mr.Selvakumar, Mr.Gopal and Mr.Sivasubramaniam.
