Madurai fish market raid, two tonnes fish seized (Video)

MADURAI: Food safety officials have carried out early morning inspection at Karimedu fish market in Madurai on Saturday- 29th February 2020. During this sudden raid, two tonnes of fish was seized after inspecting 53 fish shops in the market.

Based on complaints received, a 20-member team led by Madurai District Designated Officer for Food Safety Dr.Somasundaram carried out inspection in various fish stalls in Karimedu market here. 

The complaint was that chemicals are being used in some shops to increase the shelf life and that chemical-mixed fish varieties are being sold to customers.

Different varieties of fish come to Madurai Karimedu fish market and the officials got information that chemicals were used to keep the fish for 15 days which doctors cautioned that it affects kidneys, intestines etc.

Food safety officials have warned the shop-keepers not to indulge in such things and also warned the fish sellers that action will be taken if chemicals are used.
