MADURAI: Nearly 1,000 share-auto drivers in Madurai city today (3rd February 2020) gheraoed and protested at the Madurai District Collectorate here pressing for their demands.
They staged a demonstration condemning the harassment by police despite holding valid documents. The prime demand was that adequate compensation must be given to share auto driver Harischandran of Solai Alagupuram in the city who recently committed suicide after his auto was allegedly seized by the police.
Share auto drivers had complained that proper rules must be followed while giving permits to new share autos and fresh permits should be stopped to protect the livelihood of existing share auto drivers. They made their demands to the district collector and pointed out that RTO staff should follow humanitarian approach.
Share autos did not ply for about three hours in Madurai today and traffic near the collectorate was disrupted because of the protest.
