30 colour images of heart: OCT training at MMHRC

MADURAI: Cardiologists from various places in the country have come here to participate in two-day training program on “Advanced Heart Imaging Using OCT” at the Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Centre (MMHRC) here on November 20th 2019.

OCT stands for Optical Coherence Tomography which is an advanced imaging technique that uses a catheter which is equipped with infrared light to acquire 30 colour images of the insides of heart blood vessels.

JAPAN EXPERT TRAINS:

Dr.Takashi Akasaka, an internationally recognized expert in use of OCT technology and who practices as interventional cardiologist at Wakayama Medical University, Wakayama, in Japan is conducting the training, according to a press release here today.

The MMHRC already introduced OCT system for cardiac imaging thereby providing lot of diagnostic capabilities for the benefit of heart patients. Among those who spoke about the training session were senior cardiology consultants of MMHRC – Dr.R.Sivakumar, Dr.N.Ganesan, Dr.M.Sampath Kumar, and Dr.S.Selvamani.

“OCT system helps cardiologists in evaluating the  coronary angiogram images….It helps in taking decisions whether to insert a stent or not…It gives accurate diagnosis, provided superb image resolutions and gives precise picture of patients with complex clogged arteries,” the MMHRC cardiologists’ team told reporters here today at the training programme inauguration.
