MADURAI:  If there is one city with not a single good road, if there is a city that has not even one road with proper tar road,  potholes, pavements and footpaths on atleast the main roads, and if there is one city where the roads on which you can neither walk or drive, please visit Madurai city in Tamil Nadu. You will understand how people here suffer day in and day out and whether it rains or shines. People’s Pulse on October 15th 2019.

Yes. A walk in any ward area or a drive to any place in the 100-ward city is so dangerous that you will get a feeling that village roads are far better than Madurai streets. For the past two years or even more, it appears that the Madurai Corporation seems to be sleeping.

Sadly, this important Madurai city carries the tag of a ‘Smart City’ and the Central government allocates special funds to develop the civic amenities besides the normal funds coming through the State government. Where are these funds going?  Is the Madurai Corporation Commissioner aware of the people’s hardships? Why the roads are not being repaired or laid? Children, youth and women suffer the most.

TAX-PAYERS AND TAXING TIMES:

It is enough if it just drizzles in Madurai. The roads across the city turn into danger zones. It is a sad story in Madurai that civic attention is very poor even though it is among the top tourist destinations in the world thanks to the famous / wonderful Meenakshi Temple and other heritage spots.

FILE A PIL AND QUESTION:

Safe roads are people’s right. They pay Corporation taxes. Following several accidents, injuries and appeals from local people in many wards, there seems to be a point that is emerging which is to file a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court to know what is happening to funds, are they being utilized, are Central government funds going to right purposes and whether the Madurai Corporation officials are spending for the basic need of safe roads. It is tax-payers’ money.

Madurai roads are now a road to danger. It is dangerous to step out everyday. When it rains it is much worse and shame that this is given as smart city status. Are the Madurai Corporation Commissioner, City Engineer, and officers down under, are taking Madurai people for granted?

GIVE US GOOD ROADS WILL TAKE A MASS MOVEMENT SOON. And Courts are there to expose the civic body if it doesn’t act soon. From Avaniapuram to Alagarkoil Road, from Kaalavasal junction to Simmakkal or from Teppakulam to Thabalthanthi Nagar…..Can your walk or drive safe? The people must question.
