MADURAI: The “AIIMS for Madurai” people’s movement here got a shot in the arm with senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Rajya Sabha MP Mr.L.Ganesan supporting the demand that the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) should be established only in Madurai and not elsewhere in the State.

“Based on information I had gathered from the Union Health Minister J.P.Nadda, the Central government’s choice as of now is Madurai only. He told me that the Tamil Nadu government is yet to send its choice of place for AIIMS. From my side, I will support for Madurai,” he said amidst cheers..

Mr.Ganesan was speaking to select audience including representatives of trade body MADITSSIA after taking part in the yoga day celebration at Madura College in Madurai on June 21st 2017 (Wednesday). The senior BJP leader felt that Madurai would make a right choice for setting up the AIIMS because this city is considered like a second capital and already it has high court etc

“After speaking to the Union Health Minister, I feel that Madurai has a bright chance for getting AIIMS. Since a cetral team had already inspected the site, I think it will materialise,” he added. The “AIIMS for Madurai” campaign began in Madurai after the Tamil Nadu government and Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami created a confusion among people by stating that the proposed AIIMS will be shifted to Thanjavur area.

Mr.V.S.Manimaran, Chief Coordinator of “AIIMS for Madurai” movement and MADITSSIA past president, told the BJP leader that a delegation had already met Union Ministers Mr.Nadda and Ms.Nirmala Sitharaman to convey the reasons why Madurai (Thoppur)  needs the central government AIIMS and how it benefits people of southern districts in Tamil Nadu.

Prof.Dr.R.Srinivasan, BJP State Secretary, Mr.Saseeraman, BJP Madurai city urban district president, party cadres and representatives of various organisations were present in the meeting.
