MADURAI: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has objected tooth and nail the Tamil Nadu government’s sinister design to shift the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) from Madurai to Thanjavur.

This leading healthcare institution which was sanctioned by the Central government to be set up at Thoppur near Madurai for the benefit of people in southern districts should not be shifted to Thanjavur and the Tamil Nadu BJP will mobilise public support in this issue, BJP State Secretary Dr.R.Srinivasan has said.

Speaking at a public meeting organised in Madurai on March 4 (Saturday) to highlight the achievements of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government in the last three years, he said that only Madurai will be right place for a major institution such as AIIMS because of rail, road and air connectivity and also because it will be a boon for patients in 10 districts in Tamil Nadu.

“What is the sudden reason for Chief Minister Edappadi Palanisamy’s proposal to shift AIIMS from Madurai to Thanjavur? Is it because it is”Chinnamma”‘s place (Sasikala) and the AIADMK government wants her land value to go up? The BJP is committed to bring this all India institution only to Madurai and our party will take up the matter with Central government,” Dr.Srinivasan assured.

He had appealed to the people to support the BJP in this issue because there is no logic or reasoning for the AIADMK government’s proposal for shifting when already 100-acre land was identified for AIIMS in Madurai.

Dr.Srinivasan questioned why other political parties in Tamil Nadu are not questioning the reason why Chief Minister Edappadi Palanisamy during his recent visit to New Delhi had asked for shifting of AIIMS to Thanjavur.

BJP Madurai urban district president Saseeraman, women’s wing State president A.R.Mahalakshmi and senior RSS leader C.K.Narasimhachari were among those who were present.
