Apollo Madurai performs brain ‘pacemaker’ surgery

MADURAI: The Apollo Speciality Hospitals in Madurai has successfully performed a Deep Brain Stimulation surgery, which is considered as a challenging operation procedure for a life threatening brain condition. The patient’s name is A.Vijayan (age 62 years).

Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) is like doing a “pacemaker” of the brain similar to the cardiac pacemaker of heart, and it is an established unparalleled treatment method for various disorders affecting the brain including Parkinson’s Disease.

At a press conference conducted in Madurai on 11th December 2020, a team of medical experts of Apollo Speciality Hospitals Madurai have explained about this surgery. The medical team includes top doctors- neurologists Dr.S.Meenakshi Sundaram, Dr.S.N.Karthik, Dr.P.Suresh, neurosurgeons Dr.D.Shyam, Dr.S.Sundararajan and Dr.Kevin Jospeh, along with neuro-anesthetist Dr.Nisha and intensivist Dr.Padmaprakash.

Dr.Rohini Sridhar, Chief Operating Officer of Madurai Division-Apollo Hospitals and Mr.K.Manikandan, GM (Marketing), were present at this press meet in Madurai where the medical team had explained about the brain surgery-DBS procedure, which involves implanting certain electrodes in parts of brain which regulate electrical impulses to neutralize abnormal impulses that cause motor movement disorders.

The patient Mr.A.Vijayan was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease which is a disorder-degeneration of specific parts of the brain.
